You made it; Hippie-town, Ohio, I mean, Athens, Ohio. Known for its college parties and shenanigans. But now that you’re here, where do you smoke at? You’re not able to smoke in the place you’re staying and it’s not legal to smoke out on the street; you have to go incognito. After spending a fair bit of time here, I started to get attached to a few locations in particular to smoke down by myself or with a few friends.
Bong Hill
Bong Hill. Ironically, I would not recommend bringing a bong or any glass up here (perfect for a vaporizer, blunt or joint – don’t forget a lighter!). The hike up is a little steeper (you might have to climb a couple of steps) but the view is totally worth it! Nestled on the East side of campus, overlooking the historic town and campus. It’s best during sunset, watching it set over the campus, or during the night when you can see the town light up as well as the sky. Although it is popular by name, this location is little known and is rarely populated. I enjoyed many hikes out here, as it is only a 5-10-minute walk from where you park your car and a 20-25-minute walk from campus (I would not recommend walking there. It is next to a highway and is not a fun walk there and back, especially after smoking). Athens has Lyft and many other cab services if you find yourself / your party unable to drive for any reason.
Radar Hill
Not looking to climb up so much? Radar Hill is perfect for an evening stroll or a quiet fire. Located behind Athens Insane Asylum (The Ridges) about a mile out is Radar Hill. Although it’s a hill, it’s a nice easy slope to meander up. It sits atop most of Athens, perfect for star viewing. There is a fire pit up there as well, perfect to sit around with a piece and ghost stories. With wide flat paths and wonderful views, this hike is best suited late evening / at night (make sure you bring a flash light!).
Strouds Run
Not wanting to do any hiking at all? Strouds Run State Park is the perfect pull off spot to smoke one down. It overlooks a 160-acre lake, being Dow Lake, along with having tons of hiking trails is you change your mind. Whether you’re overlooking the “beach” or one of the many pull offs, this makes for a beautiful scenery when smoking. Although it can get busy during good weather, most people don’t care as long as you keep it away from kids (duh).
Technically, Marijuana is still illegal in Athens, and federally everywhere. However, in 2017, Athens passed T.A.C.O. What is TACO you might ask? It is an ordinance meant to disincentive law enforcement (APD etc.) from making arrests relating to marijuana misdemeanors by lowering fines and court costs to zero dollars. Although, OUPD (Ohio University Police Department) continue to site individuals, even if they aren’t directly on campus. If you opt to smoke (publicly or not), be careful where you’re smoking and who all is around you.
